Artist Statement

My paintings explore light as both a physical presence and an emotional experience. I am fascinated by the way sunlight moves through leaves and flowers, illuminating color from within and transforming ordinary fragments of nature into something luminous.

Rather than depicting expansive landscapes, I move closer. I immerse the viewer in foliage, color, texture, and light, creating an intimate experience of being surrounded by nature. These close perspectives are connected to a sense of comfort and belonging; the feeling of being held by the natural world.

My fascination with light began growing up in Siberia, where long winters made sunlight fleeting and precious. Years later, standing beneath the stained-glass windows of cathedrals, I encountered that sensation again: light passing through color and transforming both the physical environment and our experience of it. The writings of Abbot Suger gave language to something I had long felt intuitively; the possibility that light can elevate the ordinary and affect the inner world.

Through layers of transparent and opaque paint, variations of texture, and luminous color, I explore the space between representation and abstraction. Leaves and flowers remain recognizable, yet they also become shapes, patterns, and passages of color reminiscent of stained glass.

Ultimately, my work is not simply about depicting nature. It is about creating an experience of light, stillness, and connection; an invitation to look closer and rediscover a sense of wonder within the familiar.
